Eyetv season pass4/16/2023 ![]() "burn to DVD" or VCD option from the menu Simple transfer to iMovieHD, iDVD, or DVD Studio Pro Other pluses: Upgradeable drives (need more storage, get another firewire drive), no subscriptions, no forced updates (a big downside of tivo), HDTV tuner for $300 (bus powered too), no restrictions/proprietary formats: transfer full mpeg files to Mac & PC computersĮxport to MP4, DV (4:3 & 16:9), AVI, Divx, and also whatever formats quicktime can handle :smokey: I looked into alternatives, and the EyeTV hardware/software combo allowed me to do most of what Tivo can and also received a bunch of awards. (See my broadcast flag thread) I also got it because I wanted a Tivo-like thing, but I am cheap bastard and hate subscriptions. I needed some sort of didital TV gizmo before July 1st. Simply put, you won't be able to watch the video on that machine, but it should record. Since EyeTV has no hardware video support, it can not pass the video to your graphics card (would be wicked-cool like in PC's ) and instead has to decode it using the processor. Your problem: Converting the video to another size uses an enoumous amount of processor power and same with decoding the video to watch. 400Mhz is a little on the low side, but I think it should work as a recorder. EyeTV takes much less processor power to simply record a data stream from the firewire tuner to the disk than to actually do something with it. That said, if you use the EyeTV500, you can still record all the shows you want in HDTV on your computer. It simply takes the broadcast and channels it to the disk. There is no conversion options to save space like the 100/200. The 500 series is a what-you-recieve-is-what-you-get device. I'm just not enough of a TV taper to have much use for it.and I never use it to watch TV on anymore. It's pretty slick, easy to use, pretty customizable, fun to play with, provides TV listings throught Titan TV, etc. It's not the device, it's me (hey, I've never used that line on a non-human before!). If I were in a roommate situation, or living in a dorm, I'd probably have it and a 20" iMac G5 and that would serve as my TV, as well as my computer.Īs it is, it just sits there. I thought I should tape a bunch of "Law & Order: SVU" episodes and edit together a montage of Mariska's best "tight outfit" moments, but that seemed like a pervy kind of way to spend my time. Like I said, I only use it to record a particular show once a week. ![]() ![]() When that living situation changed in February, it instantly lost most of its appeal and use. Since I've moved to my new place (and it's just me again), I have a real TV and I find myself NEVER using my EyeTV anymore, except on Tuesday nights at 10:00 to record "The Shield" on FX because I give them to a friend who is never up that late.īut seeing how that show's season is winding down (five more episodes), I'll probably sell mine because a) I don't need it for TV watching anymore and b) I can't stand 99.7% of the horseshit on TV anyway.why in heaven's name would I ever want to record it?Īt the time I bought it, I was looking at it more as a way to let me watch TV in my room (just didn't have a lot of room or a place to put a real TV). I recorded a few things, mostly for the geek/gimmick factor, just to see. It was neat to sit and watch cable TV on my PowerBook (in a separate window or full screen). This thing came in really handy because, at the time, my Mac was my TV. I now use Philips LED bulbs and have no problems.I've got the EyeTV 200, and have had it since last September or so, I think.Īt the time, I was in a roommate situation, where my entire life was pretty much in a 12x12 bedroom. The engineer was impressed that the light bulb would cause the signal loss, but was glad to know about it. So, you never know what sort of local interference may pop up. Switching on and off the light affected the signal! On contacting the local CBC engineer, he said all was well at their end.it actually turned out to be interference from a Sylvania LED light bulb that I had installed in the basement! It would be turned on around dusk and off later in the evening.one day I switched it on and the picture went away and the light bulb went on (pardon the pun). The best tuner at the time was an AccessHD box (since retired) while the other tuners would not be watchable. Generally the signal would get better later in the evening. The signal usually reads at 96 - 100 on the various tuners/TV's versus the NTV signal on 21.1 that reads at about 70.Īnyway, last fall, every evening at around 5:00 or so CBC would completely crap out, NTV would be fine. John's, NL the year before last with the local CBC station on Ch 8.1. Just to relate an experience of mine here in St.
